The Lost Coast

The Lost Coast refers to a stretch of land on the Pacific Ocean in Northern California. It has a fascinating history. I found that the The Hiker's Hip Pocket Guide to the Mendocino Coast very useful for tid bits of history about trails in the area.

We began our backpacking trip from the southern trail head, Usal Camp. It is accessible by taking County Rt 431 off of Route 1 at mile marker ___. Rt. 431 is a windy, dirt road that is not gaurenteed to be open during the winter rainy months. However, we made the 5 mile trek with a our VW Golf. Despite its currently remote location, Usal camp was the location of a lumber mill as were many of the river beds along the coast.
