The Waimai Canyon on Kauai is the "Grand Canyon: of Hawaii. The are ample hiking oppurtunities down into the canyon that are rewarded with amazing views.

However, if you cannot make to the office, you will only get charged $5/person/night if you camp without a permit.

The next day we backpacked into the Napali Coast. Although, there are many camping areas only a couple were open. Each area, though, had many sites. Permits for this area cost $10/person/night. We finally spent the last three nights in a rental cottage. We got a great deal from Classic Cottages (http://www.ClassicCottages.com). For only $70 a night we rented a two bedroom cottage. Although it was not directly on the beach, it was within a 8 minute drive.
